Feb. 9, 2009 — The Central High Caribs got some sweet revenge Saturday against the Educational Complex Barracudas in the Central high gym by pulling away late for a 72-62 victory.
Last weekend on the Barracudas' home court, the Caribs got blown out of the gym 74-51, but this week things were much different as the undersized Caribs utilized their quickness along with great defense to come away with the huge win.
"I told them that all they had to do was listen to me and stick to the game plan and we could win," Central Coach Alvan Jarvis said. "I also told them that this was their home turf and they better defend it and defend it well."
As was the case in the earlier meeting, the Caribs started fast in the first quarter, but this time they did not succumb to the Barracudas' defensive pressure as they did before. A balanced attack, led by point guard Lamar Bough, enabled the Caribs to outscore the Barracudas 20-18 in the first period.
The second quarter was tightly contested, but the Caribs managed to turn back every challenge the Barracudas mounted. Once again Bough led from the front. His seven-point second quarter, along with great team defense, enabled his team to enjoy a nine-point lead at the half at 43-34.
The Caribs would enjoys their biggest lead of the game at 15 points in the early stages of the third quarter as they opened the period outscoring the Barracudas 18-12 for a 63-48 advantage. The Barracudas would score the final three points of the third quarter to trail by 12 at 63-51 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter turned out to be the lowest-scoring period as the Barracudas turned up their defensive pressure trying to get back into the game, but the Caribs' defense was also tight, and both teams committed a lot of turnovers — along with some cheap fouls. The fouls were more a result of fatigue, however. The Barracudas' Kyle Sylvester kept his team in the game by hitting five of seven free throws in the fourth, but in the end the day belonged to the Caribs and they were able to hang on for the 10-point win at 72-62.
Bough led the Caribs with a game-high 19 points. Tauron Jones chipped in with 15 points, and Kadeem jones netted 12 points. For the Barracudas, Sylvester led the way with 16 points and Warren Brooks netted 12.
