District Will Host MATHCOUNTS Competition

Feb. 4, 2009 – On Feb. 26, at the Palms Court Harbourview Hotel, 90 junior high and middle school mathletes from St. Thomas and St. John will compete in the chapter competition of the national MATHCOUNTS program. The Department of Education and Rotary Club of St. Thomas II, who also serves as the local sponsor, have organized the event. Schools that will be represented include: Julius E. Sprauve, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Joseph Gomez, Joseph Sibilly, Leonard Dober, Lockhart, Ulla Muller and Yvonne Bowsky Elementary Schools, All Saints Cathedral, Antilles, Sts. Peter and Paul, V.I. Montessori International and Wesleyan Academy.
"Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall," said Ludence A. Romney, district mathematics coordinator. "Students will be competing individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches in the areas of algebra, probability, statistics and geometry." The four mathletes with the highest individual scores and the members of the top team will advance to the State MATHCOUNTS finals, to be held on March 26, on St. Thomas.
MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. This year, the competition will consist of approximately 40,000 students, representing over 6,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories as well as Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools.
