June 4, 2009 – Traffic at the intersection at Veterans Drive by Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and Banco Popular will be rerouted for two weeks while the V.I.Water and Power Authority replaces waterlines.
WAPA spokeswoman Cassandra Dunn said the work, which began Wednesday, will require motorists to use a new traffic pattern from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day including weekends.
Eastbound and westbound traffic is being reduced to one lane each. Traffic traveling eastbound will be unable to turn into Frenchtown from the intersection, but will be able to turn north towards Banco Popular. Traffic traveling westbound, will be unable to turn north towards Banco Popular, but will be able to turn into Frenchtown.
Right-hand turns at the intersection, turning toward downtown, will be prohibited during the work. However, Dunn said Thursday morning that traffic from Frenchtown may proceed north straight ahead toward Banco Popular and the following intersection.
After 3:30 p.m., traffic patterns will return to normal
Dunn asks that motorists use alternate routes to their destinations. She said, "The authority appreciates the patience of the motoring public during this important rehabilitation effort."
The work is part of WAPA's about $2.5 million ongoing project to rehabilitate aging pipelines under Veterans Drive. The piping at the intersection is more than 25 years old, Dunn said.
