June 23, 2009 — The American Cancer Society's ninth annual Relay for Life on St. Thomas will take off at 4 p.m. Saturday with opening ceremonies at the Charlotte Amalie High School track.
Setup begins at noon Saturday and runs until 2 p.m.
This year's theme is "Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back" in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Relay for Life around the world. The survivors' dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the traditional luminary ceremony, featuring the survivor's lap, begins at 7:30 p.m.
At that time, the track will be lined with luminaries — paper bags with candles inside — each representing someone with cancer or who has battled the disease. Luminaries can be purchased until 7 p.m. for $5.
The nearly 24-hour event also features a plethora of entertainment, from games and movies to performances by Pro-Style and Nuff Pressure bands. The public is invited to attend, and the entry fee is $10.
The awards ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by the last lap and closing prayer starting at 10:30 a.m. and ending around 11 a.m.
