“Dana, Steven and Brenda” by S.B. Jones-Hendrickson, Eastern Caribbean Institute, Virgin Islands fiction, pp. 400, $14.95
“Dana, Steven and Brenda is a sequel to “Andy Browne’s Departure.” The three members of this intriguing cast are linked via the political, melee and academic issues at the University of St. Siven. Steven plays his usual roles and tries to manipulate both Dana and Brenda. In the end they outfox him. They both rise to heights in the academic world and the political world. He is displaced from the throne of grace. Even though it took them some time to get it, Dana and Brenda truly demonstrate that man is smart, but woman…
Dana may have thought that she should not have hired Brenda to be a member of the University of St. Siven. But from where they both now sit in the pantheon of academic and political power, they did not do too badly. There are the inevitable trips to Las Vegas and to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino. Fun and frolic are interspersed with academics and politics.
“On Time and in Step: Reunion on the Glory Road” by Gloria I. Joseph, V.I. Literature, pp. 266, $25
Gloria Joseph’s dynamic hosts in this intellectual feast, Sojourner Truth and Malcolm X, lead us through stimulating exchanges by such diverse figures as Emily Dickinson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Ella Baker, Rosa Luxemberg, Zora Neal Hurston, Ida B. Wells and Geronimo. The past and its presence dramatically merge as they wrestle with such topics as crime and war, economic depression and the English language, education and race. The result is a challenging and exciting treasure trove that asks readers to think, and think hard.”—William Loren Katz, author of 40 books including “Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage”
This a creative historical narrative about Black world events and people. The text is fictional but the persons were/are real life actors on the stage of African, African-American, American and African-Caribbean history. Dr. Gloria I. Joseph utilizes the skills of a literary writer to create fictive stories that demonstrate the intersection of those histories. The central figures of her stories are now time-honored ancestors, who meet each other on the ‘Glory Road’…These literary biographies stimulate the intellect and signify the critical importance of historical memory for generations present; those passed and those come, material essential to the preservation of the people’s history and our collective future.”—James Turner, Ph.D., professor of African American Studies, Cornell University
“God Spare Life” by Dr. Claudia Lynn Thomas, William Morrow & Company, fiction hard cover, Dr. Claudia Lynn Thomas's "God Spare Life"pp. 339, $29.95
The author came across the Adinkra symbol Nyame Biribi Wo Soro carved into a door at the Union Temple Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Its shape reminded her of two kidneys, significant to her as a transplant recipient. But when she learned more about the origins and meanings of this and other Adinkra symbols, many of them wove themselves into her own story. Read more about the symbols and their place in God Spare Life on pages i-ii.
The book puts the reader in the middle of a story filled with drama and excitement. Yet it is the true story of an extraordinary black woman, whose stormy life has included daunting struggles (and inspiring triumphs) with culture, education, nature and a life-threatening illness.
“Tortola’s Gold” by Diana Stewart-Walker, West Indian Literature, pp. 42, $21.99
Tortola’s Gold” will give you a little bit of Tortola as seen through the eyes of the GOLDen agers. Their contributions to the cultural history of the British Virgin Islands have been enormous, creating a positive awareness of people’s roots. This carved for them a well-earned recognition in today’s society. These people are precious and can truly be named Tortola’s Gold. You will obtain a wealth of information.
These GOLDen agers, through interviews, will take you back in time to events that occurred in the early 1900s. They will tell you about their school days, about Christmas and also about things in general in the BVI. Each one has a personal, unique story. Can you remember when your grandmother and grandfather told you stories about long ago? Did you enjoy them? I know I did. I hope to bring back the nostalgia. The interviews are written in English and Spanish. The Spanish section is written to give the Spanish visitors and residents their slice of nostalgia. These are only a few of the many GOLDen agers in Tortola today.
