Tabarie Henry leads Texas A&M 4 x 400m relay to first victory in 30 years at Texas Relays with a time 3:01.55, which is currently the third fastest time in the world. Leslie Murray’s Delaware State 4 x 400m relay team took third at Florida Relays in 3:06.80, which places his team in the top ten in the world! Courtney Patterson opens season at Florida Relays with a 5th place finish in the 100m.
"We had a day that we can remember for a while at Texas A&M," head coach Pat Henry said. "Anytime you come in here and win four relays, with two meet records and total nine wins on the final day, it makes for a very special day. This was a fine, fine meet for this team.” The V.I. Tabarie Henry made a major contribution to the relay team victories for Texas A & M and is proving to be a force to reckon with not only in NCAA Division I track and field where he led the world early in the indoor season 400m, but he will no doubt be a contender for the open 400m title as well.
The Virgin Islands Track & Field Federation (VITFF) is confident that should it be able to field a 4 x 400m team of Tabarie Henry, Texas A & M; Leslie Murray, Deleware State University; Terry Charles, South Carolina State University; and Calvin Dascent of South Plains Jr. College, the team that set a national record in Havana last year (3:07.05), will have a good shot at a medal at the CAC Games this summer. The challenge will be to get this team in the race for the medals without jeopardizing their individual chances to medal as in the case with Henry in the 400m and Murray in the 400m hurdles. As it stands Murray, who is scheduled to compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships, would have to hustle to Mayaquez, Puerto Rico, from Canada immediately to compete. Dascent was a member of the South Plains Junior College team that won two national titles. Jonathan Fontenberry, a potential member of the team, hopes to be eligible for the games and will be a valuable addition. “These guys are experienced and they are fast; all they need is the necessary support to get ready, stay ready and get to the start line together.”
Courtney Patterson, after being disappointed for having to abandon efforts to qualify for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, had her first outing for the season as she finished fifth in the 100m at the Florida Relays with a time of 11.45.
VITFF is accepting donations toward the support the team members. The current registration drive for athletes, coaches, technical officials, volunteers and supporters is underway.
