Earth Day 2010 presents "Ground Zero" at the Bovoni Landfill and a Tour of Stalley Bay scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. Location: Bovoni Baptist Church (across the street from the Texaco Gas Station). Have you wondered what happens to your waste when you dispose of it? Come see for yourself with the Environmental Association of St. Thomas-St. John (EAST) for the post-Earth Day weekend tour with the Waste Management Authority.

There will be a brief presentation at the Bovoni Church before the tour of Stalley Bay on the importance of recycling. The group will then move to the main hill area and overlook to hear briefly from Jim Casey of the V.I. Environmental Protection Agency. It will then hear from Steven Aubain of VIWMA on the history of the site and what is planned for the future by the authority. There will be a visit to the water treatment plant guided by CEO Steven Aubain. In addition, participants will hear from Marcia Taylor, UVI Marine Science, talk about the diverse natural resources of the area and marine reserve sanctuary. Finally, everyone will go to Stalley Bay for a snorkel trip and explore the marine environment of the bay with Paul Jobsis, UVI Marine Science.
Participants should bring: closed shoes (no flip flops), sun protection and/or a hat, water and lunch for the hike and tour. Bring a bathing suit and snorkel gear for snorkeling at Staley Bay. For more information, call Jason Budsan at 775-6048 or e-mail [email protected].
