Entries from schools throughout the St. Thomas-St. John School District are being accepted to compete for the Cultural Education Awareness Award, which is given to the troupe, floupe, float and other cultural events that most accurately and authentically promote Virgin Islands culture. It is geared toward encouraging students in particular and residents in general, to further utilize their research, critical and creative-thinking skills when preparing entries for the various cultural events held each year, according to Glenn “Kwabena” Davis, director for the Division of Cultural Education.
“Entries slated for participation in the upcoming Virgin Islands Children’s Carnival Parade on April 30th are being sought. This year, the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA) has partnered with us and presented its first grand prize of $3,000 in furtherance of our mutual mission to promote and instill pride in Virgin Islands culture,” said Davis. “This award was presented to the Love City Leapers during the 2009 St. John Festival and Celebration. A panel of five judges from St. Croix and St. Thomas deemed this children’s entry the best representation to receive the award.”
The grand prize may be used to attend one of the following upcoming activities:
- The St. Croix Christmas Festival Children’s Parade
- The St. John Festival Parade
- The Tortola Festival Parade
Interested troupes are asked to submit a description of their entry to the Cultural Education Division via e-mail to [email protected] or via fax to 774-8168. For more information, contact Davis at 774-0100, ext. 2808 or 2806.
