This past Saturday we attended the local advertising awards and from the outset it was clear that a handful of nominees were going to command the evening’s trophies. Congratulations to UVI for snagging the Best of Radio prize, as well as the Gold Addy for Music with Lyrics for the Afternoon on the Green jingle composed by Ashley George and produced by PR Director, Patrice Johnson. Karen Gutloff also picked up a couple of gold awards for the Reichhold Center for the Arts in the print categories. The student award went to graphic designer, Paul Remy, Jr., a UVI student and member of the on campus Ad Club. Paul also received a scholarship courtesy of the national body.

Other winners included Cathy Mae Sitaram, who produced the very powerful and haunting television spots for the Stop the Bleeding campaign. Mock LeBlanc Brown (MLB),led by Beth Mock Le Blanc and Terri Brown cleaned up in several categories, while Malinda Media swept the publication design categories.

Kevin Hughes, president of the Ad Club, presided over the evening proceedings, which were held at Prior-Jollek Hall at Antilles School.

Not everybody will be in the Bacchanal Again for 2010. Master teacher, Idalia “Dolly” Dockery left St. Thomas this week with a group of over 40 CAHS students and chaperones. They were headed to Japan. Their first stop was scheduled to be Tokyo. The excitement at the airport was palpable as the group prepared to check luggage. All of the students were outfitted with backpacks sporting the Chicken Hawk colors of gold and blue. Among the chaperones were my BFF Robert Chen, and Debbie Donovan, who seemed to be Dolly’s right-hand go-to person. Aurea and Juanita, Jesters missing you this year!

Even as I wished bon voyage to one BFF, another arrived that afternoon. Longtime friend and former St. Thomas resident Jackie Bingham has returned home for a visit after a long absence. The former press secretary to first lady Joan Harrigan Farrelly has been kind enough to come back at this time to help me prepare to participate for the first time in this year’s Cultural Fair at Emancipation Garden. Stop by booth #20 in front of Jen’s to say hi and for some free samples of VI Fruit Preserves made with sugar, wine and spices, as well as some that are sugar-free made with agave syrup. Pretty yummy, even if I say so myself.

It’s Carnival, baby….. although it will all end this coming Saturday with a big bang of fireworks over the Charlotte Amalie harbor. Happy Carnival to everybody! Let’s stay safe and have a bacchanal of a time!
