The woman killed about two weeks ago after being hit by an on-duty police officer while she was crossing the street has been identified by police as 39-year-old Venice Carman.
A native of Jamaica, Carman had only been on St. Thomas for about a month before she was killed, according to a V.I. Police Department release.
Initial police reports said that the officer was driving east on Veterans Drive and hit Carman while she was crossing the road. The officer has since been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Traffic Investigations Bureau.
"The case will be investigated the same as any other case — there will be no preferential treatment of police involved in any investigation," Assistant Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman said in Wednesday’s statement.
