The Virgin Islands Resource Conservation & Development Council Inc. (V.I. RC&D) is seeking volunteers to help plant the new Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School Rain Garden. Join V.I. RC&D from9-11 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 28, to help complete this combination storm water control practice and youth experiential teaching tool.
Rain gardens are natural solutions to help reduced the impacts of storm water runoff by slowing and storing runoff. They merge two important goals: aesthetics and water quality. Rain garden plants and soils remove pollutants from storm water, and also slow and infiltrate storm water into surrounding soils, helping to replenish aquifers. Rain gardens are designed for use on home sites, parking areas, roadways and other small sites. Come help V.I. RC&D achieve its goal to provide pollution-prevention technology transfer and education to Virgin Islanders to alleviate storm water flooding and pollution problems throughout the territory.
All students seeking community service hours, teachers, ecologists, biologists, landscapers and St. Croix nature lovers who want to help improve local schools are welcome. Please bring gloves and wear clothing suitable for working in the soil and sun. Water and tools will be provided. Contact the V.I.
