The Rotary Club of St. Thomas Sunrise has awarded its 2011 Ronald R. Magnuson Scholarship to graduating senior To’Quoya George of Charlotte Amalie High School. Annually, the Rotary Club of St. Thomas Sunrise awards the four-year university scholarship to a graduating St. Thomas-St. John senior who has been accepted to the University of the Virgin Islands.
This year’s recipient wrote a compelling essay on “What is the Most Pressing Environmental Challenge Facing the Virgin Islands? What is Your Solution?” Rotary’s president, Kathrynne Green, presented the four-year scholarship to a very appreciative student during the Honors Night ceremonies at her high school. “I am very proud to award such a deserving Virgin Islands student with a four-year scholarship to the University of the Virgin Islands. Ms. George’s essay clearly outlines the environmental hurdles and obstacles our islands face today.”
The scholarship was established in 2007 in honor of Rotary Sunrise charter member Ronald M. Magnuson, who maintained a deep belief and commitment to the education of young people. The Magnuson Scholarship pays for tuition, books and academic fees for the four years as long as the recipient remains enrolled at UVI full time and maintains a satisfactory grade point average. “We are so pleased that the Rotary Club St. Thomas Sunrise, Magnuson Scholarship, has been able to sponsor three prior students, Aniqua Donadelle, Angelica Claxton, and Joseph Douglas, and allow them to help them follow their dreams to a bright and productive future” said President Green.
