First Lady: Talk to Teens About Alcohol

0

In advance of the second annual national PowerTalk 21 Day, April 21, V.I. First Lady Cecile de Jongh urges parents to begin a conversation with children about underage drinking, especially the dangers regarding drinking and driving.

PowerTalk 21 Day was developed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving in response to research showing that three out of four children say their parents are the leading influence in their decisions about drinking.

“Parents have the power to influence their children’s behavior,” de Jongh said. “Having a healthy dialogue guides children’s decision-making and helps them make informed and responsible decisions.”

De Jongh and MADD suggest parents utilize the Power of Parents handbook, which highlights ways to reduce underage drinking behaviors, even in households with below average communication.

Parents can get the handbook, along with conversation starters and tips, at www.madd.org/powertalk21.

Gov. John de Jongh Jr. proclaimed April 21 as a day of dialogue and discussion amongst families in the territory.

The governor and first lady encourage all V.I. families to take steps to educate and dialogue with their children on healthy lifestyle choices.
