Dec. 15, 2004 – The State Water Resources Research Institute Program of the U.S. Geological Survey has recommended that the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) at the University of the Virgin Islands continue to receive federal support. The Institute is periodically evaluated based on its effective use of annual grant funds. An evaluation panel found UVI s Water Resources program to be well adapted to the education and research needs of the territorys residents.
The UVI Water Resources Research Institute, under the direction of Dr. Henry Smith, is one of 54 water resources research institutes established at land-grant universities throughout the United States and its territories. The Institute operates a well-equipped meteorological station, a water quality laboratory and a geographic information systems laboratory on the St. Thomas campus of UVI. In addition to research support, these facilities are used for demonstrations and to provide UVI students with exposure and training in water resources areas.
A memorandum from Henry J. Vaux, Jr., a member of the evaluation panel, stated that The Institute does an excellent job with the development of new scientific expertise, and the institution s support of Virgin Islands graduate students at mainland institutions of higher education is particularly praiseworthy.
