Meetings will be held this week across the territory to get public input on the government’s plans to develop addresses for all streets across the territory.
“The community is playing their part,” said Christopher George, coordinator at the Geographic Information Systems Division of the Lieutenant Governor’s Office, on Tuesday.
George said the pilot project will start on St. John with Cruz Bay and parts of Contant. On St. Thomas, it will begin with downtown Charlotte Amalie and include some of Hospital Ground and King’s Quarter. The first St. Croix area to get addresses will be Mon Bijou.
Residents of the pilot project communities, community leaders and the general public are invited to attend the scheduled meetings.
In these pilot areas, the office will conduct the full addressing process – from engaging the community to physical sign erection. The first of the community meetings are to increase public awareness of the process, the people doing the work, how the community can play a part and what is expected.
George said that the names chosen will be based on consensus by the people who live on the street.
This week’s meetings start Wednesday on St. John, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at St. Ursula’s Multipurpose Center; and on St. Thomas at 7 p.m. at Charlotte Amalie High School Auditorium.
On Thursday, the St. Croix meeting begins at 7 p.m. at John H. Woodson Junior High School.
