Details are sketchy, but Government House said Wednesday that a contractor was selected Monday to repair the three spots on St. John’s Centerline Road near Coral Bay that are crumbling.

Spokesman Jean Greaux said the government was not ready to release the name of the successful bidder until all the documents were in and the contract was signed.

Greaux said that if problems arise with that particular bidder, the government will move forward with the next preferred bidder.

According to Greaux, the bid was for a little more than $1 million.

The bids were initially due Aug. 16, but Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said, at that time, that the deadline was extended. He had no further information.

After numerous phone calls last week and this week, Smalls apparently referred the matter to Government House.

Smalls said earlier he expects the repair project to start in September with work on all three spots completed by March 2014.

Problems with the road began with Hurricane Otto in 2010 but May’s heavy rains caused the worst spot on the road to crumble more. The trouble spots were marked with orange barrier cones and crews installed an asphalt berm at the worst location in June to deflect water around the badly eroded area. The road is one way at that spot.

Centerline Road is the only main road in and out of Coral Bay, and residents worry that the alternate unpaved route through Bordeaux won’t be able to handle the trucks that bring supplies to the Coral Bay area.
