St. Croix Teen Golfers Finish Respectably

0

Nov. 7, 2004 – The leading Virgin Islands male and female golfers at the Teens on the Green competition at Carambola Golf Course had rounds that just about any golfer below the professional level would be happy with.
However, Jake Monokian, 16, and Helyne Joseph, 15, both of St. Croix, were disappointed with their showing.
Monokian blamed a second nine on Saturday with hurting his chances for finishing further up in the standings.
Joseph said she was nervous the first round, and that resulted in her 85, her worst round of the tournament. On Saturday she hit a 78. On the final round Sunday she was standing on the 18th green with a chance to tie for third. Her putt rang out of the cup and she dropped to fourth.
Both golfers have participated in Teens on the Green for three years and each of them has been able to climb up in the standings each year. Last year Monokian finished in 20th place. Joseph finished eighth two years ago and fifth last year.
Both golfers call Carambola their home course.
Monokian said he expected the greens to be in better shape than they were this year, but added, "Every year the tournament gets better and better." (See "Teen Golfers Parading in Christiansted ").
Joseph's total for the three days was 246; Monokian's total was 254.
