Winston Arnold Gibson, Ph.D., died on Jan. 20. Dr. Gibson was born on Sept. 18, 1925, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Zora (Parris) and David Gibson. He left high school to join the U.S. Navy during World War II.
After finishing his tour, he returned to Cincinnati and earned his GED. He went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Cincinnati. Gibson served as a police officer for the City of Cincinnati, Ohio, for many years. In 1963 he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety for the Island of St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. In 1965, he returned to the states and subsequently earned a Ph. D. from Michigan State University where he taught criminal justice for a number of years. He also taught at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.
Dr. Gibson returned to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1975 and served as Commissioner of Public Safety during Governor Cyril King’s Administration. He later taught at the University of the Virgin Islands. In addition, he was owner and President of Global Security Inc., while residing on the island of St. Croix with his family.
During his retirement years, Dr. Gibson resided in Maryland and spent a number of years teaching at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland.
Dr. Gibson was preceded in death by his brothers: David, Willford, Norman and Donald. He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 34 years, Evelyn Williams-Gibson of Ellicott City, Maryland; children: Ila Gibson-Vance of Jessup, Maryland; Blaine Gibson of Grafton, Wisconsin and Karon Gibson-Mueller of Ipswich, Massachusetts. He also leaves five grandchildren: Pharon Crosby, Elisabeth and Eva Gibson-Mueller, Emily and John Gibson; great-grandson, Wyatt Perry; and many nieces and nephews as well as other family and friends.
He will be remembered as a lover of family, learning, books and jazz.
