ACC Fundraiser Wagapalooza Postponed to May 24

The most popular dog show on St. John has been postponed until May 24.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the threat of inclement weather prompted officials to postpone the event held at Winston Wells ballfield in Cruz Bay.

The wildly popular, distinctly St. John-style dog show is a fundraiser for the St. John Animal Care Center, the island’s sole organization dedicated to the care of abandoned and abused cats and dogs. The St. John ACC operates with minimal government funds and depends on its main fundraisers, including Wagapalooza, to keep the doors to its no-kill shelter open.

Dogs and their owners will compete in categories ranging from Best Old Timer and Best Costume to Best Look Alike and Best Trick. At the end of the evening, a Waga King and Waga Queen will be crowned and the one rescue dog deemed to have “made the most miraculous change in spirit and health since it entered the shelter” will be given the coveted Babe Award.

Admission to Wagapalooza is free and open to the public. Class entries will be at 4:15 p.m. Dog owners and their pets not entering the show categories are invited to join the Parade of Paws for a $5 donation to the ACC.

The event will feature community celebrity judges, food for sale by Kati Steinborn of Weddings by Katilady and drinks served up by Joe Palminteri all evening – as well as a bounce house for the little ones.

The public is invited to head out to Winston Wells ballfield and vote for their favorite pooches at the 14th annual Wagapalooza on May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information, email [email protected] or call (340) 774-1625.
