UVI TO HOLD SCIENCE ACADEMIES

0

The University of the Virgin Islands, through a grant from the National Science Foundation and the UVI Health Careers Opportunities Program, will conduct Saturday Academies for students in grades six through 12 who have an interest in the sciences. There will be a middle and junior high school Saturday Academy for grades eight through eight and a high school Saturday Academy for grades 9 through 12. Academies will be held on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
UVI's Saturday Academies are being conducted to increase students' interest in and awareness of science, mathematics, engineering and computer science through interactive sessions with scientists.
Saturday Academies will meet one Saturday each month. They begin on Oct. 7 and run through May 5, 2001.
The Academies will take place on each of the University of the Virgin Islands' campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
There will be occasional Saturdays when the Academies will meet at other locations for an in-depth look at a particular topic.
Students will be in touch with scientists and health career professionals and will utilize UVI's technological resources, as well as the resources available at each of various field trip sites.
In addition, students will have access to UVI student mentors who will be able to answer their questions about university life and science careers.
