INVESTIGATION OF POLICE SHOOTING CONTINUES

June 5, 2001 — V.I. Police Department officials continue to investigate the Sunday shooting death of a 17-year-old St. Croix youth at the hands of officers.
Police Lt. Gregory Bennerson said Monday afternoon that conclusions have yet to be drawn by investigators in the death of Asie Rogers, who was shot once by officers Sunday at about 9:30 p.m. during a domestic dispute in Spyglass Hill. Bennerson did confirm the original sequence of events in that an officer fired on the youth to protect the youth’s mother and another officer.
The youth was armed with a seven-inch kitchen knife that he allegedly used repeatedly to threaten his mother and the officers, Bennerson said.
Rogers, a student at Central High School, was apparently involved in an argument with his sister on Sunday that escalated and the youths mother became involved.
"It appears the juvenile had some problems with his mother for some time," Bennerson said.
The officer who killed Rogers is on administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations by the department's Criminal Investigation Bureau and Internal Affairs Unit.
