Sept. 6, 2001 – Three federal grants totaling $901,936 are headed into the Planning and Natural Resources Department's budget, according to recent releases from Delegate Donna Christian Christensen:
– $864,475 from the Environmental Protection Agency. This "augmentation" funding is part of a continuous award the deparment gets every year. The money will be used for programs encompassing clean air, clean water, drinking water and public water supply, air pollution control, underground storage tanks, and pesticides.
– $25,000 from the Commerce Department. The funding is to conduct research toward reducing non-point source pollution (such as soil runoff, untreated sewage disposal and toxic wastes). The information obtained is to be made available to the public in brochures, a handbook and PowerPoint presentations.
– $12,461 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This grant will support reporting on the territory's commercial fish and shellfish resources and the disseminating of these statistics through DPNR’s Fish and Wildlife Division and the National Marine Fisheries Service.
