March 19, 2002 – If you haven't gotten your March 15 Government Employees Retirement System check, call 776-7703 to let GERS know.
Some of the March 15 checks apparently are lost in the mail, GERS administrator Laurence E. Bryan said Tuesday. "We don't know why," he said.
Bryan said that the GERS payroll provider, ADP, mailed the checks in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, on March 13. Some checks were delivered on March 14 and 15, but the rest still were missing as of Tuesday. He said that until GERS hears from the individuals who did not get their checks, the agency won't know how many are missing.
He said GERS will stop payment on all known missing checks and issue new ones to replace them by Friday.
Bryan said about GERS issues about 6,000 checks to government retirees and their survivors. About 20 percent of the recipients have direct deposit, he said, and the rest receive their checks via the U.S. Postal Service. He said the lost checks make a good case for having the retirement payments deposited directly into the recipients' bank accounts.
