March 18, 2002 Applicants for Government Employees Retirement System scholarships have until April 12 to get in their paperwork. The awards are for college-bound students with a parent, step-parent or legal guardian who is a government worker or retiree, and therefore a GERS member.
Students must be accepted into a four-year bachelor's program at an accredited institution, have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average from one of the territory's secondary schools, and demonstrate financial need.
GERS will award up to three scholarships, each equal to the amount of a year's full tuition at the University of the Virgin Islands — currently $4,095. However, recipients may apply the award to the tuition at the institution of their choice, according to Dee Baecher-Brown, executive director of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, which administers the scholarship. The GERS Scholarship Committee will select the recipients.
Applications are available at GERS offices on St. Thomas (in the GERS Building) and on St. Croix (in Orange Grove) and at the Community Foundation office. For more information, call the Community Foundation at 774-6031.
