Lady Bucs Announce Fall Basketball Home Season
UVI's Lady Buccaneer basketball squad opens a seven-game fall home season Monday, Dec. 16. The Bucs will host five teams from the United States during a three-week period. Four of the squads are from NCAA Division III schools and one is a Division II contender.
The opener will be against Eastern Mennonite University's Lady Royals, who will be visiting from Harrisonburg, Va. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Admission is free.
The UVI Lady Bucs are coming off a successful 9-1 season in Puerto Rico's ODI league. UVI coach Cyril Benjamin's 11-woman squad is led by graduate student Elbe Brathwaite, and seniors Natasha Pickering, Latoya Garvey and Chalma Moorhead.
Other teams visiting St. Thomas for the Lady Bucs' winter season include Berea (Ky.) College, Scranton (Pa.) College, Emmanuel College from Franklin Springs, Ga., and Wheeling Jesuit University, the division II squad, from Wheeling, W.Va.
The game schedule is as follows:

Dec. 19 – UVI vs. Berea College – 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 30 – UVI vs. Emmanuel College – 7:30 p.m.
Dec. 31 – Scranton vs. Emmanuel – 7:30 p.m.
Jan. 4 – UVI vs. Wheeling Jesuit – 7:30 p.m.
Jan. 5 – UVI vs. Wheeling Jesuit – TBA
UVI's Current Events Web Page Features NASA, Crucian Costume Design
The Current Events Page of UVI's web site – www.uvi.edu – now features a series of photographs from the recent NASA Awareness Days activity as well as a look at the costume designs offered for the UVI troupe in the 2003 Crucian Festival Parade. Early-Bird Sign-up Extended for UVI's Crucian Festival Troupe
The "early-bird registration period" for joining UVI's 2003 Crucian Festival Troupe has been extended to this Friday, Dec. 6. The festival committee is inviting everyone in the UVI community as well as the general public to participate in the troupe.
The Crucian Festival Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. Early-bird sign-up fees are $50 for UVI students, and $80 for staff, faculty and the general public. Participants will receive a costume and refreshments during the parade. UVI Music Department Plans Christmas Concert on December 7
The UVI Music Department's Christmas Concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. The concert will feature the University's Concert Band and Choir. This year's production will feature the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors," the Christmas Story as expressed through the eyes of a child.
Special guests include an orchestral chamber ensemble from the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, students from UVI's Music Department, and community members. Professor Austin A. Venzen will conduct the concert, while professor Elvira O. Green will serve as stage director. Cecilia Dennery will sign for the hearing impaired during the Christmas Sing-A-Long. A visit by Santa Claus is also planned.
Tickets – $30 (covered section), $20 (middle section) and $10 (upper section) – can be purchased from the Dockside Bookstore (Havensight), Krystals & Gifts (Tutu Park Mall), UVI Humanities Division, UVI Bookstore (St. Thomas campus) and the Reichhold Center Box Office.
St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Plan Recruitment Social December 7
UVI faculty, staff and students are invited to join the UVI St. Thomas/St. John Alumni Chapter and friends for the fourth annual Recruitment Social at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Petite Pump Room in the Edward Wilmoth Blyden Wharf on St. Thomas. There will be complimentary hors d'oeuvres, live entertainment and a cash bar. Admission is $20. Tickets are available from chapter officers and the Alumni Affairs office. UVI Fall Semester Nearing End
UVI's fall 2002 Semester is winding down. Dec. 8 is the last day of classes. Final examinations are scheduled from Dec. 9 through Dec. 15. The fall semester officially ends on Dec. 15.
Holiday Baking Workshop to Feature Sweet Bread
The Family and Consumer Sciences Program of UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will offer a holiday baking workshop in two sessions on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Ramona Blades Community Center in Kirwan Terrace, adjacent to the St. Thomas campus. The early session will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An evening session is scheduled from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. For registration and more information contact Blanche Mills at 693-1072 or 693-1080. Agronomy Workshop Set for St. Croix on December 12
Agronomy program leader at the Agricultural Experiment Station, Dr. Elide Valencia, will conduct an agronomy workshop at 5 p.m. Dec. 12. The workshop – entitled "Legumes to Augment Forage and Small Ruminant Production in the U.S. Virgin Islands" – will highlight research results with the use of tropical legumes suited for heavy clay soils. Discussion will center on quality (both forage and animal performance), parasite control, hay production and producer grant availability. Interested participants will meet at the east end entrance of the REC Building on the St. Croix campus and then proceed to meeting place. For more information call Yvonne Horton at 692-4020.
