Dec. 17, 2002 – The Education Department has received a federal grant of $1,048,358 for its Safe and Drug-Free Programs.
Education Commissioner-designate Noreen Michael said in a release issued on Tuesday that the money will be used "to lay the groundwork for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, territorywide approach to drug and violence prevention."
Among other things, she said, Education will partner with the Human Services Department in providing after-school activities for youngsters.
A task force will be created to develop a five-year plan, Michael said. The plan will incorporate new federal regulations along with requests for proposals from not-for-profit community agencies to implement "proven, research-based programs" aimed at "reducing drug use and decreasing violence in our schools and community."
Education administrators involved in the task force plans are Dale Garee, program manager for comprehensive school health, and George Kean, director of youth promotion and delinquency prevention.
