Jan. 10, 2003 – St. Croix appears as the backdrop of the Teens on the Green World Championship Golf Series as three networks air tournament coverage this weekend that was pre-recorded in November at Carambola Golf Course.
According to a release from the Tourism Department, locally the first coverage was at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Channel 2. NBC's Channel 6 affiliate in Miami will carry an hour of tournament coverage at 2 p.m. V.I. time on Saturday, according to the release, and The Golf Channel will air an hour-long broadcast at 5 p.m. locally on Sunday.
CNN aired footage of the event on Monday featuring Teens on the Green coordinators Cheyenne Woods and Renny Roker, with Woods receiving a prestigious Turner Broadcasting Award for the organization's work in exposing minority youth to junior golf.
The Tourism Department was a sponsor of the event held Nov. 26-30. "The tournament was a great success, and I am elated to see the beauty of St. Croix and our premiere golf courses showcased on national television," Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards said.
The Teens on the Green program provides top minority golfers ages 10-17 with lessons and playing time at upscale resorts and golf courses.
According to the release, Teens on the Green is the first ranked junior golf series to be nationally televised. Through ranking points, junior players attract the attention of college golf coaches. The seven-tournament series is ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golf Week and Titleist and sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union.
