Jan. 23, 2003 – The Anti-Litter and Beautification Commission's St. Thomas-St. John District has announced the winners of its primary school poster contest held in conjunction with America Recycles Day, observed last Nov. 15.
Edwin Davis, commission chair, said the artwork submitted "shows that our youths are aware of recycling and the impact that litter has on our environment." He added: "Many posters reflected a clean and beautiful island that results when cans, bottles and paper are recycled."
Davis said he hopes that as a result of consciousness raised through the poster contest, "our youths will adopt recycling as a positive habit in their schools and communities."
One prize was awarded at each grade level. The kindergarten winner will receive a $20 U.S. Savings Bond, and the winners in grades 1-6 will each receive $25 savings bonds. The artwork becomes the property of the commission, Davis said.
The winners are:
Kindergarten — Danielle Douglin, Edith L. Williams School
First grade — Lynesha Selwood, Edith L. Williams School
Second grade — Dominique Lezama, Joseph Sibilly School
Third grade — LaShawn Charleswell, Edith L. Williams School
Fourth grade — Diamond Ash, Joseph Gomez School
Fifth grade — Micquena Dhu, Edith L. Williams School
Sixth grade (tie) — Sikizi Casimir, Edith L. Williams School, and Rebecca Best, Joseph Gomez School.
