REFURBISHING OF SPORTS FACILITIES NEARLY DONE

Jan. 21, 2002 – The Housing Parks and Recreation Department is nearly finished with a million dollars' worth of refurbishments of public recreational facilities.
Commissioner Ira Hobson said his department recently spent about $150,000 appropriated by the Legislature to resurface courts on St. Thomas and St. John.
On St. Thomas:
– At the Alvin McBean Complex, the tennis, paddleball and basketball courts have received new surfaces. Earlier, the concession area was refurbished and a pool table and pingpong table were added.
– Savan Park will get a new tot lot to complete work there. The park has a new surface on its basketball court as well as new lights and a paint job.
– Emile Griffith Park is also getting a new tot lot after resurfacing of the basketball court and a paint job.
– The Winston Raymo Recreation Center had its basketball court resurfaced and received a paint job.
– Leonard "Smut" Richards Park had its basketball court resurfaced. It earlier received a paint job, work on the restrooms and new lights.
On St. John:
Hobson said work will wrap up soon on resurfacing the Pine Peace basketball court.
Hobson noted that vandalism of recreation facilities is an ongoing problem and urged residents to report anyone they see damaging parks property. To make a report, call 774-0255 on St. Thomas or 776-6531 on St. John.
