RIMPEL ATTENDING BARBADOS CLAA CONFERENCE

March 31, 2003 – Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel Jr., chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands, will represent UVI at the Caribbean Latin American Action (CLAA) Regional Trade and Investment Conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Rimpel, who retired in 1998 as a managing partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, has more than 30 years' experience as an international management consultant.
The CLAA conference, with the theme "Competitiveness of the Caribbean," will bring together key regional decision-makers to meet the challenges affecting the future of the CARICOM community.
Conference materials state that in light of President George W. Bush's public unveiling of his "Third Border" initiative in reference to the Caribbean region, the CLAA has designated its mission as "Strengthening America's Third Border." The CLAA conference is promoting economic development led by private sector to help sustain the small economies of the Caribbean Basin.
The objective of the "Competitiveness of the Caribbean" conference is to obtain participants' commitment to the process of development that is currently under way by attracting greater investment into the region.
Representatives from the U.S. government, Caribbean heads of state and tourism officials, multilateral agencies, multinational corporations, private business owners and industry representatives are expected to attend.
The conference is co-sponsored by the Government of Barbados.
