April 9, 2003 With the April 15 tax filing deadline just around the corner, the Bureau of Internal Revenue is extending its hours to assist taxpayers with filing information and forms.
On Monday, April 14, the BIR offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. On April 15, the offices will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The last day of the taxpayer assistance program for completing simple forms will be April 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Taxpayer assistance will not be available on April 15.
Taxpayers unable to file their 2002 return by the deadline are reminded that they must properly estimate the tax due and file a valid extension on Form 4868 by April 15. Taxpayers are urged to pay at least 90 percent of the tax due to avoid penalties.
Inquiries about the extended hours of the BIR offices on St. Croix should be directed to Joseph Walker at 773-1040 ext. 224 or 265. Regarding hours on St. Thomas, questions should be directed to Roosevelt Davis at 714-9315 or 774-5865 ext. 2221 or 2223.
