Keys Wins 36-Mile Bike Race

0

June 22, 2004 – On Sunday morning twenty-one cyclists raced in the La Grange Circuit on St Croix. The race, a 4.5 mile loop, started on the north side of the Paul E. Joseph stadium in Frederiksted, passed through the center of town to Queen Mary Highway, then turned on to Concordia Road back to the start.
The 36-mile Elite race winner was not decided until the final sprint to the finish. Jamie Keys and Juancito Gario rode side by side for most of the race, but it was Keys who crossed the line first.
Gario said, "The finish was tricky. I didn't know if I should break early or wait a few meters from the line. I was watching for Jamie to make his move."
In the battle for third place Bob Halk edged out Sue Brown, the only female in the race. "Sue is a tough competitor," Halk stated, "and I didn't know if I'd beat her until the end."
The Expert cyclists, covering six laps or 27 miles, also put on a good show. Danney Fontenelle was victorious in the five-man sprint to the finish. Mountain biker John Frongillo dominated the 13.5-mile Sport category.
The complete results are as follows:
Elite – 8 laps (36 miles)
1. Jamie Keys 2. Juancito Gario 3. Bob Halk 4. Sue Brown 5. Glenn Massiah 6. Victor Cruz 7. John Harper
Expert – 6 laps (27 miles)
1. Danney Fontenelle 2. Wayne Patrick 3. Cumber Greaux 4. Raymond Brown 5. Khalil Jacobs-El 6. Eric Hutchins 7. Hanif Lafond
Sport – 3 laps (13.5) 1. John Frongillo 2. James Meyers 3. Nelson Rojas 4. Bevern Sage 5. Marius Louis 6. Paul Gillette 7. Thomas Blake
The next race for the V.I. Cyclist Federation is July 4 starting at the South Shore Café.
