V.I. Youths at Basketball Without Borders Camp


July 3, 2004 – Four V. I. youths participated in the Basketball Without Borders -Americas Camp, which ended Friday. They were Dewitt Henley of Charlotte Amalie High School, Kaylen Gregory of Antilles School,Charles Vanterpool of Good Hope School and Michael Ford of Broward High School.
The Camp was conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through a joint venture with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). It began on Monday, June 28, and was completely funded by FIBA and the NBA.
According to a press release from The V. I. Basketball Federation, the camp is intended to enhance the basketball skills of players, while instilling sportsmanship and respect for the game of basketball.
NBA players scheduled to participate were Brazilians Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Suns) and Nene (Denver Nuggets), Eduardo Najera (Dallas Mavericks/Mexico), Dikembe Mutombo (New York Knicks/Congo) and coaches from some of the NBA Teams.
Sen. Usie Richards, president of the V. I. Basketball Federation, said, "These young men are true ambassadors of the Virgin Islands as it relates to the game of basketball and this is a unique learning experience in their character development."
