Cancer Society Relay for Life Will Be Oct. 9-10

July 20, 2004 – Participants can choose to run, walk, skip and/or stroll around the oval at the 3rd annual Cancer Society Relay for Life, a 24-hour event set for Oct. 9-10 at the Education Complex track and field facility.
The event is in support of cancer awareness programs and outreach, cancer research and travel off-island by cancer patients for treatment.
The event will take get under way at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, and conclude at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct.10. Teams of up to 15 people are encouraged to sign up early.
The relay is a part of a nationwide fund-raising program for persons who have survived cancer, those who are fighting cancer, and those who are dedicated to helping them. Teams solicit pledges to raise funds and the Cancer Society sells commemorative T-shirts to help the cause.
Entertainment will be provided around the clock. Performances by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights and school groups and Karaoke by D.J. Bumpy will keep the event lively all night.
Prizes will be given for teams whose members stay on the track the longest and the team with the best-decorated tent. The local chapter of the American Cancer Society will sell soft drinks, water and food; no other vendors will be allowed.
At last year's event, more than a thousand people helped raise money to support the cause. All of the money raised goes to support cancer initiatives on St. Croix. Teams pay an entrance fee of $150 and are required to raise at least $1,500 through donations and pledges.
