Alumni Training Workshop Planned by UVI

Aug. 15, 2004 – Alumni of Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund member colleges and universities are invited to attend a free one-day Alumni Training Workshop on Saturday.
The workshop, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the University of the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center in Nisky Center on St. Thomas, is sponsored by the scholarship fund, the Lily Endowment and UVI. It is designed to assist fund member schools in increasing alumni participation and enhancing the involvement of alumni in the fundraising process. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided at the workshop.
The presenter will be Dave Sternberg, the associate director of public service at The Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University's Fund Raising School. Sternberg has an extensive background in professional fund raising. While serving as the chief development officer of Phi Kappa Theta National Foundation, he increased the annual fund by 100 percent. He went on to become the assistant director of annual giving at Butler University before founding his own company — Loring, Sternberg and Associates — which provides ongoing fund development planning, feasibility studies, campaign direction, board fund-raising training and annual fund management. In July, Sternberg took a leave of absence from his firm to work at Indiana University.
UVI's alumni affairs supervisor Jacqueline Sprauve encourages all alumni of fund member colleges and universities to attend the workshop. "Workshop attendees will be more aware of the key role alumni play in the fund-raising process at their institutions."
UVI is one of the 45 TMSF member colleges and universities across the nation.
The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, a merit-based scholarship program, was established in 1987 to assist students who have demonstrated a commitment to education in spite of their own challenges. Its colleges and universities constitute some of the nation's largest and most prestigious institutions of higher education.
Thurgood Marshall was the first African American to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court, Marshall was propelled into the international spotlight when he successfully argued the 1954 landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which ordered the desegregation of the United States' public schools.
