Nov. 9, 2004 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull Tuesday met with some big names in Washington, D.C. to come up with a strategy to protect the V.I. Economic Development Commission program.
According to a press release, he conferred Tuesday with his Washington counsels, Peter Hiebert and Barry Hart of Winston & Strawn, as well as his outside advisers, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and Michael Deaver, former communications director for President Ronald Reagan.
The strategy meetings were in preparation for his Wednesday meeting at the White House. Turnbull is scheduled to meet with Reuben Barrales, assistant to the president for intergovernmental affairs, to discuss ways in which tax rules recently passed by Congress can be implemented without destroying the EDC program.
Turnbull is also scheduled to meet with the Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Treasury Secretary John Snow during his Washington trip.
Turnbull also met Tuesday with senior economists from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the consulting firm conducting a study of the EDC program and the potential impact of the tax changes signed into law by President George W. Bush.
Also participating in the strategy briefing were Holland Redfield, a former V.I. senator; Sen. Shawn-Michael Malone; and former U.S. Attorney David Nissman, who joined the meeting by teleconference. Nissman now works for an EDC company.
Delegate Donna Christensen, according to the press release, is expected to accompany Turnbull to the meeting at the White House.
