THIS SUBTLE MOON
The New Moon on Nov. 12 was in Scorpio, a water-feeling sign of intensity, resilience, discernment, regeneration. Scorpio is the detective of the zodiac, always asking WHY? A New Moon in Scorpio feels like Halloween, with witches riding the aetheric waves. Are they black or white or some other color? Can you tell the difference?
These days we say Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the god/dess of the underworld. There s/he is, Shakti-Shiva, whirling like a Sufi dervish in the dance of endings and renewals, approaching the extraordinary stillness at the heart of our galaxy. Pluto certainly has affinity with the Scorpio experience, but it is worth keeping an eye on Mars, the classical ruler. Mars is known as the god of war. There are many kinds of warriors. Can you tell the difference? Honor to our national troops in their integrity and to subtle warriors, psychic martial artists. Mars can be subtle and not so subtle.
The zodiac degree of the New Moon is 21 Scorpio. Its Sabian symbol image reads: OBEYING HIS CONSCIENCE, A SOLDIER RESISTS ORDERS
Indeed there are many ways to be a warrior. What are we fighting for? In their Sabian symbol oracle book, Lynda Hill and Richard Hill describe this degree:
"You may find yourself in a situation where what you are expected to do is against your values. You must make the difficult choice between allegiance and inner truth. True freedom can only be found within when one faces these situations with a sense of integrity and a preparedness to face the consequences."
"The Subtle Knife" is the name of the second book of Philip Pullman's highly recommended trilogy called "His Dark Materials." In this visionary novel, the young boy Will wields the knife. He lost two fingers in a fight, the mark of the knife-bearer. Only he can use it, cutting windows into multi-universes. This New Moon in Scorpio cuts into other worlds, as it did that blade. Will and his girl friend Lyra use the knife to free ghosts lost in the land of the dead, among many other feats. Lyra is seeking knowledge about dark matter, or dust, eventually seen as a luminous golden energy of consciousness. What will we see this month?
Mars, with its arrow or knife-tipped glyph, is exactly on the point of the South Node of the Moon, known as the Dragon's Tail. This is one of the two zodiac degrees where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun, pinpointing eclipses. We just had a strong Scorpio-Taurus eclipse on October 27-28. The aetheric winds of change are blowing as strongly as the fall hurricanes. The Dragon Tail is a window into the past or another karmic dimension of experience, opened by the dynamic red blade of Mars. Just over the cusp of Scorpio, Mars is in its laser-sharp strength. At best, strong will and keen discernment leads to incisive action, assertive moves, courage to renew and penetrate secrets. What universe are you moving into this month? We have the power to let go of what is no longer life-giving and vital. It takes will and strong desire to overcome the downward pull of fear and negative energy fields that are swirling like foggy smog.
A predawn view of Venus and Jupiter in their diamond-bright shining gives inspiration, so do loved ones.
What Truth are you willing to assert? Find the warrior inside yourself and evoke your highest desires with the sharp blade of your will.
