Nov. 15, 2004 – Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen was honored on Friday evening in Washington, D.C. for her "Outstanding Political Leadership" by the Institute of Caribbean Studies. ICS is a Washington, D.C. based organization dedicated to research, policy analysis, and education with a focus on issues that impact the Caribbean and Caribbean diaspora.
Delegate Christensen was part of a distinguished and diverse group of honorees which included noted singer Jimmy Cliff, Actress Cicely Tyson and writer Caryl Phillips. Former U.S. Attorney for the District of Colombia Wilma Lewis has also been honored by the group.
Christensen is also the only Member of Congress, who represents a district in the English speaking Caribbean and is sought out by the governments of various countries to bring their issues on trade, immigration and economic development to her colleagues.
Along with Congressman Chaka Fattah, Christensen co-chairs the Friends of the Caribbean Caucus, a group of Members who have Caribbean constituencies and address Caribbean issues. Over the years, she has been vocal on issues such as Haiti, HIV/AIDS and economic development issues in the Caribbean. She has also served as the Honorary Chair of the Institute of Caribbean Studies Gala Committee in Washington, DC for the last 7 years.
Music for the event was provided by the Virgin Islands own Image Band who honored the Delegate by playing a stylized version of the Virgin Islands March as she came to the podium to receive her award. The honor was given for her work in support of Caribbean concerns.
