Nov. 29, 2004 — Dean C. Plaskett, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) announced Monday afternoon that the Lagoon Street Pump Station in Frederiksted has failed.
Plaskett said in a release from his office that the Public Works Department had reported there is a crack in the station's main sewer line. As a result, raw sewage is discharging from the point of the damage, west of St. Patrick's School, into the nearby Lagoon Street Gut and finally into the waters off of the Frederiksted Public Beach, Plaskett said. DPW is currently working to repair the Lagoon Street Pump Station's force main.
Plaskett is advising the public to avoid the areas around the Lagoon Street Gut, Frederiksted Public Beach and the Frederiksted Pier. DPNR is also said children and adults with compromised immune systems should avoid the above-mentioned areas, and the impacted beaches. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health, the release said. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted area.
