I am writing this after another power outage. I hope my power stays on long enough for me to finish this letter. It is unbelievable how poor the electrical service is in the Virgin Islands. It seems the only thing WAPA is good at is raising prices. I have resided in so called 3rd world countries that has a more stable power supply. The actions or inactions are hurting the local economy right when our economy is financially stressed.
For example, after a power outage I turned my computer back on to find that it had been damaged by the power outage. This cost my business about $1500 in repairs and 3 days down time. I lose about $500/day when I'm not working for a total cost to me of about $3000.00. I'm just a small business. What is it costing out economy when hundreds of workers are idled, computers are destroyed and time spend recovering lost data, and this is only part of the picture. A local computer store told me their business goes way up after each power outage, at least some one is benefiting. I lost my computer again a couple of weeks ago. Even though this time I could not see a direct connection to the power outage, there had been about 4 per week for the previous 2 weeks and computers even with the proper protection are sensitive to their power sources and can not take it. This time my lose was over $6500 and I'm just one person.
We are in a very high tech age now that requires a stable power supply. WAPAs inability to provide it is hurting our economy in a very silent and erosive manner.
What is happening at WAPA? This needs to be looked in to! People need to be replaced with ones that can do the job because obviously they can't. Come on WAPA you are a disgrace.
All I here is lip service about how they are improving things, but actions speak loader than words and the actions have been very insufficient. Maybe a boycott is in order. What would it cost WAPA if everybody turned their electricity off for 10 minutes each day for a week?
This is unacceptable and WAPA should be ashamed!
