'Against the Tide' Breast Cancer Swim Benefit Set

0

Feb. 1, 2005 – The third annual Against the Tide in the Virgin Islands Swim for Breast Cancer will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Magens Bay.
This fundraiser has been an annual event in the United States for 12 years as a competitive swimming event to assist breast cancer survivors who may need financial assistance for medical care and to aid in research to help stop this prevalent disease. The Virgin Islands own Against the Tide began in 2003 as a family event where every member of the family can be a participant as a swimmer, a swimmer using fins, or a wader who merely walks in the water, or even tote someone along on a float from one end of Magens Bay Beach to the other.
Last year 88 people, spanning in age from 6 months to 76 years, were in the water participating. Past contributions have helped raise $1707 to assist V.I. residents who have breast cancer. The group hopes to make this figure grow each year with this fun family event, a release said.
All monies from participants go to Partners for Health at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, which has a special fund to be used for breast cancer patients only. The check will be presented at the end of the awards ceremony.
The organizing group needs community assistance to help cover operating expenses, lifeguards, media, T-Shirts, and awards. Sponsor dollars also cover safety equipment, banners and printing, photography, trophies and medals. Anyone wishing to contribute in this manner can mail a check to Against the Tide in the Virgin Islands, P.O. Box 9787, St. Thomas, VI 00801.
Advance registration is available through 5 p.m. Wednesday at $10 for adults and $5 for children 17 and younger. The first 100 to register will receive a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at Magens Bay gatehouse, Caribbean Surf Co. in Havensight, Connections on St. John, East End Secretarial Services and American Red Cross.
Event-day registration is $15 for everyone. Registration will close at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to give people time to walk to the far end of the beach after registering at Shed No. 1. Those who come late will still be able to register and participate, but they will not start with the clock.
The awards ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Shed No. 1 with prizes going to the first place finishers in each of 6 categories : male swimmer with fins, male swimmer, male wader, female swimmer with fins, female swimmer, and female wader. Also there is a special award for the school and business teams with the most participants, and for the youngest and oldest participants. Eleven trophies will be handed out. Medals will go to the first 100 finishers.
