VI-EPSCoR Spring Science Seminar Series Opens Tuesday, Feb. 8
Dr. Richard Nemeth, director of Marine and Environmental Studies at the University of the Virgin Islands, will open the Spring 2005 VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Dr. Nemeth's presentation is titled "Linking larval history to juvenile demography in the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus)." The lecture is based on a paper presented by Dr. Nemeth at the Association of Marine Labs of the Caribbean in Trinidad in 2003.
The lecture will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will continue at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is presented by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. Financial Aid Awareness Week Begins Feb. 8 on St. Croix Campus

'Year of Languages' Celebration Continues with Free Film on Feb. 9
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with a showing of the Brazilian film "City of God" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The screening location remains to be announced. The film is free and open to the UVI community. A monthly series of activities is also being planned for the observance of the "Year of Languages." The next, titled "Love in any Language," will be an exploration of love and romance in many cultures. It is scheduled for 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, in the UVI Little Theatre, located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. UVI-Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated March 11
UVI's St. Croix campus invites alumni, students, faculty and the entire Virgin Islands community to participate in the fourth annual UVI-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday, March 11, 2005. The walk/run featuring the theme: Run Or Walk With Me to Celebrate UVI's 43rd Anniversary – will serve as the kick-off to UVI's 2005 Charter Week Activities. The walk/run begins promptly at 6 a.m. (assembly time is 5:30 a.m.) in the K-Mart parking lot in Sunshine Mall. Participants will proceed along the Queen Mary Highway to the University's St. Croix campus, ending at approximately 8 a.m.
The registration fee is $15 for adults and $12 for students and children. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Light refreshments will be provided on conclusion of the walk/run. Commemorative prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Registration forms are available from the St. Croix campus Chancellor's Office. The V.I. UVI's Upward Bound to Plan for 40th Anniversary Program on Feb. 12
UVI's Upward Bound program will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2006. All Upward Bound alumni are invited to attend the first meetings of the 40th Anniversary Planning Committee. Meetings are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus and in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The agenda includes nominating committee officers and creating a directory of Upward Bound alumni. 34th Agriculture and Food Fair Set Feb. 19-21 on St. Croix
The 34th Annual Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands will be held on St. Croix from Feb. 19 through 21, on the Grounds of the Rudolph Shulterbrandt Agricultural Complex, in Estate Lower Love. "Keeping Agriculture Alive through Technology in 2005" is the theme. Opening ceremonies are set for Saturday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. under the Big Tent. The fair is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the V.I. Department of Agriculture. Innovative Communications is the 2005 corporate sponsor. UVI's 16th Afternoon on the Green Set for March 6; Cooks and Volunteers Needed
The grounds of the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will be alive with food and family fun from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6th, when UVI celebrates its 16th Afternoon on the Green. Cooks, as well as general volunteers, are being sought.
