Feb. 7 — The Windward Islands raced past a 119-run second innings deficit to beat the Leeward Islands on the fourth and final day of their fifth-round Carib Beer Series match at the Cancryn Cricket Ground on Monday.
The Windwards got the 120 runs needed win on the impressive batting of Devon Smith, who led the chase with 67 before being caught.
Smith, named the Man-of-the-Match, lent seven fours to his 142 runs in the first innings. The Leewards had added 274 to their 262 first innings total, surpassing the Windwards' declared 417 for 9 first innings score. Junior Murray and Darren Sammy were not out with 18 and 3 respectively.
Hydon Shallow added 16 before being caught out by wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs off a Wildon Cornwall bowl.
Overnight batsman Stuart Williams led the Leeward's second innings with a century before lunch, striking 14 fours and three sixes, and scoring 115 before being bowled by Rawle Lewis, 180 for seven wickets.
Omari Banks led the Leewards Monday with a half-century before being stumped on a Junior Murray catch off a Lewis bowl. He finished with 58.
The Leewards started Monday already down five wickets.
A sparse crowd ringed the cricket grounds Monday, in sharp contrast to the thick, raucous swarms around the grounds over the weekend.
Play started half an hour early Monday to make up for lost time due to rain on Sunday.
