March 4, 2005 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has agreed to listen to angry parents and students of the St. Croix Central High School after a decision by the school's Parent Teacher Association to file a lawsuit against the V.I. government this week.
Sonia Boynes, public relations officer for the governor's St. Croix office, said Friday afternoon the governor would be meeting with parents 6 p.m. at Central High School's gymnasium.
Parents, teachers and students are upset because a Middle States Association of Secondary School's accreditation team visit for the school that was previously scheduled for this week was postponed indefinitely.
Principal Kent Moorehead previously told the Source that several structural improvements to the facility that were recommended by Middle States had not been made, including the resurfacing of the school's parking lot and improvements to the school's science labs. Angered by the inaction of the Education Department in carrying out its mandates to the school, parents on Wednesday decided to file suit against the government and planned to protest at Turnbull's birthday party Saturday during a PTA meeting. Turnbull, who was off-island earlier this week, decided to meet with the parents Friday evening to hear their concerns. The planned protest at his Saturday birthday party is still scheduled.
