March 7, 2005 – Delegate Donna M. Christensen returned to Washington D.C., Monday to attend a bipartisan retreat on Homeland Security. The retreat is designed to give members of the House Committee on Homeland Security a look at the challenges on its agenda in the 109th Congress. Spread over a two-day period, the retreat features briefings on nuclear and bio-terrorism.
Christensen departed for the retreat after attending the 40th Anniversary Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama to mark among other events the Selma to Montgomery March across the Edmund Pettis Bridge. Charlotte Amalie High School student Victoria McFarlane whose winning essay on Voting Rights, earned her a trip to Washington, D.C. and Alabama accompanied Christensen.
"The weekend was a thought provoking, emotional and inspirational experience, perhaps more so than in the past, because of the participation of so many of the freedom fighters and leaders of the movement," said Christensen. "One cannot help but come away in deep introspection on whether they are doing what they should be to further the cause of freedom – including economic freedom and freedom from premature illness, and poor educational systems in our own districts and in our nation."
