Three Dead in Frydenhoj Fire

March 16, 2005 — Three people are dead and two are hospitalized after a trailer fire in Frydenhoj Wednesday morning.
Virgin Islands Fire Services and the VIPD responded to the call at the trailer home, located just east of the Frydenhoj ball fields. The agencies are investigating the cause of the fire and will determine whether "suspicious activity" played a role.
According to Elvin Fahie, deputy Police chief, who spoke with the Source at the scene, two adults and a child were found burned to death when responders arrived. One official said the dead were a grandmother, mother and her 2-year-old son. Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
"We are waiting for the medical examiner to remove the bodies," said Fahie.
The conditions of the two people who were hospitalized were updated later in the evening by Amos Carty, Roy L. Schneider Hospital chief operating officer and general counsel. He reported that one fire victim remained hospitalized in stable condition, and the other individual had been treated and released. Their names and relationships to the deceased were not released.
Bystanders at the scene said a propane tank exploded in the trailer home, and the occupants tried to escape through a back door that was locked. Fahie would not confirm that information.
A section of Redhook Road was closed from the Frydenhoj ball field to the Buddha Bar and VIPD diverted traffic.
"One thing for sure, life is uncertain, so live it to the best of your ability," Fahie said.
