UVI Strategic Plan 2012 Town Hall Meetings Postponed
A series of University of the Virgin Islands Town Hall Meetings, scheduled for the week of April 11, has been postponed. UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster called for the meetings to seek input from members of the Virgin Islands community about how the University may be able to meet the future needs of the territory. Sessions were scheduled for April 11 on St. John, April 12 on St. Croix and April 13 on St. Thomas. New dates for UVI Town Hall Meetings on all three islands will be announced as soon as possible. UVI Annual Service Awards Set; St. Croix Session Postponed to April 18
UVI will recognize the efforts of its employees during the 31st Annual Service Awards presentations on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. The St. Thomas campus awards are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. They will take place in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. The St. Croix awards – originally scheduled for April 12 – will now be presented on Monday, April 18. The session will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Center. UVI's Human Resources Office has posted the complete lists of those to be honored on the "Latest Links" section of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. Class schedules and registration information for UVI's two summer sessions and fall semester 2005 are available on the Academics page of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. Links are also offered for on-line registration.
UVI Plans Health Careers Summer Academy for High School Students
The University of the Virgin Islands is offering a Health Careers Opportunity Summer Science Enrichment Academy on the St. Thomas campus designed to excite students about careers in the health industry. The residential academy – sponsored by UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics Emerging Caribbean Scientists Program – will run from June 19 – July 29. High school students (grades 10 through 12) who are considering careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, other health areas (except nursing), allied health, clinical psychology and clinical social work are eligible.
Participants will explore basic concepts of biology, chemistry and mathematics through selected readings, demonstrations and laboratory investigations. Sessions will be offered in computer skills, language arts, learning strategies, test-taking skills, college life and more. Details and application forms are available from high school counselors and science teachers. Interested students and parents may also call Judy Roland-Fahie, grant administrative coordinator, at 693-1232. Applications are due by April 24; faxed applications will not be accepted.
Carnival Practice Scheduled April 15 on St. Thomas Campus
Practice for the UVI Carnival Troupe has been scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 15, at the Dining Pavilion parking lot on the St. Thomas campus. All UVI faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends are encouraged to join the University's 2005 Carnival troupe. On-line sign-up is available from the UVI web page – www.uvi.edu. – More photos of carnival costumes for men and additional options will be posted on the web site as soon as they become available.
April 12 EPSCoR Lecture to Focus on Long Spined Sea Urchin of St. Croix
Genetic differentiation among populations of the long-spined black sea urchin in marine habitats surrounding St. Croix will be the subject of UVI Assistant Professor of Science Dr. Stuart Ketcham at UVI's next EPSCoR Science Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, April 12. The session is scheduled for noon in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. Lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. The series is sponsored by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI Plans Graduate Programs Open House on Both Campuses April 15
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct a Graduate Open House on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses on Friday, April 15. Individuals in the Virgin Islands work force are encouraged to participate. The session is designed to show how UVI's graduate programs in Business Administration, Education and Social Sciences can help individuals improve their marketability and upward mobility through skill enhancement and technical development. An emphasis will be made on job placement, financial aid opportunities and graduate admissions requirements. The Graduate Open House will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas, with a videoconference link to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. UVI Offers Mini-Courses in Science and Math for Teachers of Grades 7-12
UVI's Science, Math and Technology Professional Development Project is hosting a series of mini-courses for science and math teachers in grades 7 through 12 in the territory's public and private schools. CZM Hearing Scheduled April 26 on Proposed UVI-VIERS Project on St. John
The University of the Virgin Islands announces a Public Hearing for a Major Land Costal Zone Management (CZM) Permit for the renovation of an existing lab building and construction of an office building and conference center at UVI's Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) located at No. 5 Estate Lameshur Bay, St. John. All interested persons are invited to be present and be heard at a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Conference Room of the Legislature Building on St. John. The St. John CZM Committee decision meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 20, at the same venue. To review plans for the proposed project, make an appointment with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources by calling 774-3320.
UVI Career Fair, Development Conference Set April 21-22 St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands Counseling and Placement Center has scheduled a Career Fair on the St. Thomas campus from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday April 21. Located in the Upper Campus/Library area, the fair is designed to provide UVI undergraduates with the opportunity to network with the Virgin Islands business community. Employers
can also arrange to interview students for full-time positions, internships and part-time employment.
The Career Fair is part of a two-day spring 2005 Professional Development Conference on April 21-22 sponsored by the St. Thomas and St. Croix Chapters of the UVI Accounting Association. The theme of this year's conference is "Lifting as We Climb: An Ongoing Commitment to Professional Excellence." A panel discussion featuring six UVI alumni will precede the Career Fair from 10 a.m. to noon on April 21. It will take place in Chase Auditorium (B-110). Student Trustee Candidates Sought; Election Set April 20
The Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas Campus is seeking candidates for the 2005-2006 student representative to the UVI Board of Trustees. Candidates must be: a V.I. resident; a full-time matriculated student, a junior or senior in good academic and social standing, and enrolled on the St. Thomas campus for the 2005-2006 academic year. Contact the Student Activities Office in the Student Activities Center (between the Middle and North Dormitories) for an application form or call 693-1111 for details. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 15. Elections will be held on Wednesday, April 20.
SGA Elections St. Thomas Scheduled April 20 on St. Thomas Campus
The UVI Student Government Association on St. Thomas will hold its annual election for the executive and student council members on Wednesday, April 20. The election coincides with the elections for student representative to the UVI Board of Trustees. The polling times/locations are noted here:
– 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. — CA Building
– Noon to 2 p.m. — Cafeteria
– 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. — Business Building
UVI St. Thomas Campus Health Fair Scheduled April 21
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Health Fair 2005 will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in the Sports and Fitness Center. The theme for his year's fair is "Unfolding Your Future: Health an Occupational Asset." Services to be offered include blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, and HIV testing. The fair is free and open to the public. For details, call Health Services Supervisor Diane Ruan-Viville at 693-1124.
Upward Bound Alumni Schedule May 14 Videoconference Session
The next meeting of the Upward Bound Alumni Association will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14. The meeting will be held simultaneously on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses via videoconference. On St. Croix the meeting will be held in The Theatre (Evans Center room 401). On St. Thomas the meeting will be held in Chase Auditorium (room B-110). All Upward Bound alumni are urged to attend. For more information call 693-1130 or 692-4182.
