April 20, 2005 – The Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools visited Central High School Wednesday morning to check progress on projects needed for the school to regain accreditation.
Noreen Michael, V.I. commissioner of education, said in a press release, "The school received its preliminary visit on Jan. 31 and deficiencies were noted by the visiting team." And this time, "Visiting representatives were pleased with the progress that has been made." She said this visit would allow MSA to make a validation review of the school May 10 to 13.
Concern had been expressed in February that these visits would not be made. (See "Stakeholders Blame Government for Delay in Central High Reaccredidation Visit").
According to the Wednesday release, after the May visit MSA will make one more visit to the school for a final inspection of the major projects.
If the projects are not completed, the school's formal validation report will not be forwarded to the MSA Advisory Council.
Deficiencies noted as needing attention prior to todays visit were upgrades to the parking lot and existing laboratories and the conversion of existing classrooms into laboratories.
Michael said, "Major progress was made and noted in all the aforementioned projects," She added, "During the summer, it is anticipated that the parking lot upgrade and the conversion of the three classrooms into laboratories will be completed; the current sewage problem will be rectified; and substantial work on the electrical upgrade will also be completed."
Michael concluded the release by congratulating school administrators, staff, students and school improvement team. She said it has been "a long road to where we are today, but the cooperation exhibited by each of you toward the common goal has been awesome. There is, however, still much to be done. We ask your continued support as we work to complete all mandates by MSA."
