May 3, 2005 –– Three Virgin Islands organizations each received $750 grants from the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Association. They were among the $10,500 worth of grants given to 14 organizations across the Caribbean.
The Virgin Islands organizations receiving grants include CASA of the Virgin Islands, which was nominated by Innovative Cable TV St. Croix, United Way of St. Thomas-St. John, nominated by Innovative Cable TV St. Thomas-St. John, and the Woman's Coalition of St. Croix, nominated by Choice Communications.
According to a press release from CCTA issued Tuesday, the organization usually gives just 10 grants a year, but the board at its April 21 meeting decided to give out more this year.
"The missions of theses 14 outstanding nominees made it difficult to decide between them," CCTA chairman Jose F. Alegria said.
The organization, formed in 1983, represents cable and telecommunications companies throughout the Caribbean as well as programmers, software and hardware supplies that support their businesses.
The Community Charities Program began in 1993. To date it has awarded nearly $140,000 to charities across the Caribbean.
