Abandoned Vehicle Removal Continues

0

May 4, 2005 – The territory's Abandoned Vehicle and Beautification Task Force will sweep several St. Thomas areas in the next few weeks to get rid left-behind vehicles.
The offensive starts Thursday and Friday when the Task Force will remove about 40 abandoned vehicles in Contant. The area runs from the stop light across from the entrance to Victor's Restaurant to behind the Viking Corp. building.
On May 13, the Task Force moves to Long Path in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Long Path residents must remove their cars from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that day so crews can tow away derelict cars and removed rubbish from the gutters. Any cars left on the street after 6 a.m. will be towed at the owner's expense.
Starting on May 16, the Task Force in conjunction with the V.I. Housing Authority plans to remove more than 100 abandoned vehicles at Tutu Highrise.
The Task Force will move to Mandahl Bay as well as Tabor and Harmony during the week of May 23.
The owners of those abandoned cars removed by the Task Force will have to pay a $250 lien if they go to register another vehicle. Ownership is traced through the Vehicle Identification Number.
The Task Force began towing abandoned vehicles to a plot of land adjacent to the Bovoni landfill in February after a hiatus of more than a year.
James O'Bryan, who heads the Task Force, said in April that 50 vehicles were expected to be removed from the area around Lionel Roberts Stadium to create more parking spaces for Carnival events. Another 175 were removed earlier from various other locations.
The Coastal Zone Management permit for the Bovoni tire shredder allows the government to collect 25 abandoned vehicles per day. The batteries, oil and tires, and other hazardous materials are removed from the vehicles. The batteries and oil are shipped off island, and the tires are stockpiled until the shredder is operational.
The contractor, V.I. Recycling, ships what's left of the vehicles off island. He said one shipment has already gone and another is in the works.
O'Bryan did not return two phone calls requesting comment.
